Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who does Newport Little League Serve?

Newport Little League serves the children and families of Newport, RI.  Registrants must reside or attend school in Newport.  Address verification and/or school enrollment required.

2. When does the season run?

Typically, the Regular Spring Baseball and Softball season will begin during the last week in April and run through the third week in June.  The season may be extended if we have a rainy spring and games need to be made up.

The ALL-STARS season for baseball and softball is determined at the district level and typically starts just after the 4th of July.  The end of the All-Stars will be dependent on the number of teams and how far each team goes - we keep playing if we are winning!  In the past, our All-Stars players have continued playing through the end of July.

3. How do I register?

Registration is done through our website.   Please go to the Registration tab.  A Sports Connect account must be created (if you do not already have one).

4. Which forms of payment are accepted?

Registration fees are paid by Credit / Debit card at the time of registration.  If you desire to pay by Check or Money Order - please include the name of the participant on the check/ money order  - and identify that payment will be made by check at the time of check out.  You will be given instructions for mailing payment to the PO Box and the disclaimer about returned  check fees.

5. Do you offer scholarships?

YES!  The typical scholarship is a 50% reduction in the registration fees.  If a player is in need of a full scholarship, that can be determined at the time of registration.  Please go to the REGISTRATION tab and look for Scholarship information and a link to our scholarship form.  We do ask that all families that receive a scholarship to volunteer in any way possible.  We have  multiple opportunities for volunteers.

6. What equipment should I have for my player?

All players need a glove.  Most players will come with their own helmet  (and face guard for fielding for Softball) and bat.  If a player does not have a personal bat or helmet, each team is provided with bats and helmets  (and face guards for Softball) for team use.  This is shared equipment.   T-Ball and Coach-Pitch can wear baseball / softball pants - but it is not necessary.  Baseball and Softball Majors and Minors should wear baseball pants - the color gray is standard for Spring - but really, whatever a player has is fine.  The league has some equipment that is gently used and has been donated for another player to enjoy.  Please feel free to speak to your coach or email [email protected] for further information.

7. What are player evaluations?

Player evaluations are for all players that intend on playing in the Minors or Majors league, for either Baseball or Softball.  Player evaluations are typically held in March - at Thompson Middle School.  Players will be asked to catch, throw, and hit.  It is imperative that all players attend player evaluations in order to be placed in the proper division.  Player safety is of the utmost importance.  A player will not be assigned to a division that could pose a safety concern.  It is possible for players to be moved down to a lower division, if the team of coaches feel it is necessary.  Players that do not attend evaluations will be placed in a division that correlates to the league age of the player at the start of the spring season.  Further adjustments may be warranted after the start of the season.

8. What is the typical schedule for Baseball?
All coaches schedule week-day practices based upon their schedule:
